7 p.m.  An Evening Stroll

Editor’s Note: For retiree and photographer Ken Hooten, the evening is a good time to stroll up Carlsbad’s C-Hill. You’d be surprised who, or what, you’ll meet along this beautiful nature trail.

The Ocotillo Trail is one of three beautiful places to walk for exercise and to be with nature. The Riverwalk and Carlsbad Caverns are also wonderful places to take a walk.”

Quail

lizard

I try to walk every day on the Ocotillo Trail, and to make it more interesting, I carry my camera. I try to capture wildlife in its natural form. If you keep your eyes open, you can see all kinds of animals, birds and creatures that crawl on the ground. There are also many different plants—all kinds of vegetation.”

Javalina

Mule Deer

One day in May I was really surprised to see a little javelina scurrying along searching for food in the bottom of one of the deep canyons by the trail. There are always deer all over the place, but sometimes you have to look very close because they are masters of camouflage.

 Red headed centipede

Tarantula Hawk Wasp

We should all be very particular about protecting and keeping the trail clean for everyone to enjoy. Carlsbad has many beautiful things that most other towns don’t have.”

“The city has done a wonderful job with the beach area and the Riverwalk, and of course, Carlsbad Caverns really is one of the wonders of the world.”
