Carlsbad Caverns

With 119 known caves, Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a spectacular sight to behold. The parks most famous cave, Carlsbad Cavern, is over 1000 ft deep and contains 30 miles of mapped passages. Experience the exceptional natural beauty of the largest underground cavern in the United States with a self-guided tour of the Big Room. In addition to self-guided tours you can also experience the caverns with a park ranger and tour one of the seven more secluded and more rugged caves. Ranger-led tours require a reservation and are available for an additional fee. For more information call 575-785-3012.
If you are visiting during May through October, don’t miss out on hundreds of thousands of Brazilian Free-tailed bats exiting the cave at dusk. The opportunity to marvel during this flight is free, but be sure to check program times as they change throughout the season.

Things to remember:
The year round temperature is 56F (13C) so you may want to bring a light jacket or sweater.
Baby strollers are not allowed in the cave.
If medically necessary, canes and walking sticks will be permitted.
No food, drinks, tobacco products (including e-cigarettes), gum, mints, or any product that can attract animals to the cave.
Plain bottled water is allowed.
Flash photography in the cave is permitted. We ask that you be courteous of the person next to you. Don’t forget your camera!
There is no cell phone reception in the cave.
If you have traveled to any cave in the last 10 years and are wearing the same shoes or carrying the same equipment, we will need to clean your items in order to protect the bats from a highly contagious and fatal bat fungus.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is open year-round except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.)
